Civil War era bunkers

 Civil War era bunkers

I do keep my eyes open for military related stuff as we go around.

Here are links to a couple of other bunkers I had already photographed:

This bunker sits at the far end of El Campello beach just below the C14th watchtower (visible in the first photo) and near the historic La Illeta which has Roman and Iberic ruins.

Playa Tamarit (Santa Polo)

Now we`ve driven down past the salt lakes around Santa Polo many times over the years since we began house hunting and I had noticed this bunker (as you do) but had never had the time of courage to ask Debbie to pull over and go and explore, well today we did.
The bunker sits right on the beach at Playa Tamarit and is easily accessable walking from the main road or Santa Polo.

Now sitting right next to it is this old salt barge and whilst we were looking at it and reading the very informative information board I suddenly noticed bunker 2!!

Bunker 2
Identical to the first except for the blast walls which i guess are to mask the entrance

The second bunker has a information board telling about the uses of such structures

Torrellano Roundabout

There is an old service road off the roundabout as you come to the N73 to Alicante after about 100yrds you find this bunker which obviously guarded the route into the city. This one appears to have had two levels of firing slit (just visible in the 3rd photo), the entrance (now bricked up) is at the rear, there is also evidence of a firing slit there too (to the left of the road sign in the final pic).

A further 100 yrds along this service road leads you to a narrow road branching down to the right back towards the airport. Here you`ll find the remnants of yet another bunker, this one has only the thick roof left and I would say it was destroyed probably to make room for the new bridge construction further up.

  1. You are making a great researcher for those interested in history of the SCW conflict. My brother retires from his job in Tarragona later this year to move to a new home in Torrievieja and tells me my best way to visit him will be via Alicante airport, so maybe I will get to visit some of these photographed sites that you have been identifying in your 'blog'. Interesting. Keep them coming. Carl

    1. If you do come down this neck of the world we must meet up and have a beer (or two) and actually meet in person - that would be great. My brother has a place near Torrevieja, but we have never actually visited the town - there is a retired Spanish Navy submarine in the harbour which you can explore :) I`m sure there are other interesting places also, will have to do a bit of rsearch.

  2. Cheers Richard. I think covid took the wind out of my flying mojo, but I hope to get there in near future. Carl

    1. I know exactly what you mean, we had a year of weddings last year (delayed by covid), another in North Yorkshire in November (going to be so cold) :)
