More Pershing`s Yanks (includes 20mm figure comparison)

Pershing`s Yanks

A while back I ran a game using my entire 1916/17 US force:

I noticed I was a few infantry short, so as I was ordering some stuff from Raventhorpe anyway, I added a few US cavalry figures from his Mexican Revolution range to that order. Now unfortunately Tony only does three variants, but they are quite nice! They also seem to mix quite well with the others I own, making my US force a little less cloned.

Tony`s Raventhorpe figures

MEX39 Rifleman firing, MEX38 Rifleman advancing, MEX37 NCO with pistol

Just for anyone interested I`ve done a comparative photo so you can see Tony`s fine figures alongside other Yanks in my collection.

Allied stuff

Various Additions for my British/Allied Forces

A few bits to add to my British/Allied firces

 Classic Airfix 5.5" Howitzer

A bit rough with a fare bit of flash and not as detailed as newer examples, but still does the job.

I actually used this as a proxy 155mm in my last game - Seizing Boyardville

Raventhorpe Ready-to-Roll
Humber IV

Resin body and turret with white metal gun and mantlet, virtually no flash and just a few holes to be filled - all very easy. Painted green for 1st Army in Tunisia or later actions in Sicily or Italy.

Raventhorpe Ready-to-Roll
Daimler

As with the Humber above - resin body and turret with white metal gun and mantlet, virtually no flash and just a few holes to be filled - all very easy. Again as the with the Humber, painted green for 1st Army in Tunisia or later actions in Sicily or Italy.

Plastic Jeep
Found loose in a box of plastic scrap, could be Fujimi or Airfix? I`ve repaired it as best I could added a windscreen cover from tin foil and some stowage to cover glaring gaps 😁

Carlist Support Weapons

Carlist Support Weapons

When I finished painting all those Requetes last month, it became obvious my bandera (a battalion sized unit) was terribly short of support weapons.

Now choices for suitable figures for SCW are extremely limited these days with Bandera not accepting orders, Irregular Miniatures retiring and Minairons ceasing trading! So we are left with one 20mm manufacturer - Xan Miniatures!

Now i have no idea if Xan has any plans to expand his range, but a quick email (which had an very fast reply), he was kind enough to allow me to order some Carlist beret heads along with my next order, which I placed through the website:

https://www.xanminiatures.com/es/

The figures and heads arrived promptly, I then spend a fun few hours swapping heads and adding tassels with plasterscene 😁 I then slapped on some paint and this is the result:

Hotchkiss MMG teams

The officer was a HAT Industrie German gunner

Light mortar teams

LMG teams

Medium mortar team
Straight out of the plastic pile, the crew are a mix of HAT Gernans and an old Matchbox Australian all with XAN heads

Polikarpov I-15 "Chato" (photo of I-15s at Sabadell in 1940 added 04/04/2026)

 I-15 "Chato"

The Polikarpov I-15 was nicknamed "Chaika" (Gull) by the Soviets, after its swept back upper wing.

The first I-15s were delivered to Spain in October 1936 along with Soviet pilots they soon made their presence felt over the battlefield and the Rebels called the planes "Curtiss" after aparently mistaking the fighters for Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawks! The Spanish Republicans soon nicknamed them "Chato" (snub nose).

Eventually the Soviets delivered 116 aircraft. The Republican Government bought licences to produce the aircraft and Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA) first at their factories at Getafe, then later around Alicante (plus another factory in Sabadell) built aircraft for the government, by the end of the war they had built 287 aircraft!

For most of the Civil War the Chato was the main-stay of FARE (Fuerzas Aéreas de la República Española), it was greatly respected by both sides and the Rebels were quick to use captured examples. At the end of the war quite a few Chatos ended up in Rebel hands and became part of the new Ejercito de l`Aire, in fact Aire Grupo 24 (Valencia) and Grupos 33 & 34 (both based around Alicante) all had I-15s in a report dated 29 February 1940. Also I read another report about aircraft serving with the Ejercito de l`Aire which said even on 31 August 1945, they still had 108 (both standard and bis types still in service).

A flight of Ejercito de l`Aire I-15s flying at Rabassa (Alicante)

Ejercito de l`Aire I-15s at Sabadell Airport (Catalonia) 1940

Truthfully this kit by SMER (art. 0832) is actually the later I-153 with the retractable landing, but as it only cost me 5 Euro at a flea market, I couldn`t resist and fudged the underside and landing gear using thin plasticard and filler.

2nd Companie has only one LMG and they have no light mortars or support weapons, I may have to do some thinking on how to create these using other ranges.
