Plastic Apache/Yaqui

Plastic Apache/Yaqui

I`m having a tough time finding suitable figures to add to my growing warband, that nice man Alan Hamilton was selling off some of his plastic mountain and supplied me with a mixed batch of old Airfix and Atlantic figures, not really period being more plains wars than Mexican Revolution but its my tabletop.

Not my best paint job, but they look better at 4ft across a tabletop.

Two Airfix prone figures

Frankly the Airfix 1/76th scale figures look way too small next to everyone else, but you can`t tell with these prone guys

The rest are old Atlantic

Two stalking Indians wearing wolf pelts - interesting sculpt I think

Two mounted braves

Foot braves - maybe too many bows and not enough guns for the Revolution era but hey ho

All together

  1. I filled out my 1/72 Apaches with metal figures from Irregular Miniatures. They fit in just fine with the plastics size wise.

    1. I have ordered a batch of Irregular Apache, but my son misslaid them somewhere in his messy room back in Wales, hopefully I`ll recover them when we visit next month :)

  2. Imex has a few Native American sets in plastic.

    1. Imex sets seem very expensive on Ebay and to be honest other than their wagons and ACW artillery I`ve found their sets disapointing in quality - but thanks for the heads-up I`ll do a search on PSR.

  3. Richard, neither native Indians nor the 20th Century Mexican revolution have been served well by the traditional plastic soldier manufacturers. A box that's probably more useful to you than Airfix or Atlantic / Nexus is the set of Apaches by Waterloo 1815. You can see a review on Plastic Soldier Review website. I will try to post a link here. Carl

    1. Cheers Carl, that particular set appear to be only mounted - a nice group for a raid type scenario. With these (the ones painted in this post) I now have about 30 foot warriors which is enough to be getting on with.

  4. PS I forgot to say they are a mounted set, which may not be useful for your Yacqui foot brave collection!! OOPS. Carl

  5. PPS Although Jacklex Miniatures do TWO traditional 20mm Mexican ranges, (more 25mm than 20mm?): one 19th century and one 20th century, (both lovely figures and well priced); neither range contains Apache / Yacqui tribesmen. Perhaps you could suggest this to him (ie Mark Lodge)??!! Carl

    1. It is an idea, I have ordered some Irregular Miniatures Apache which I hope are at Alex`s in Swansea?? He is such a slob at times and failed to locate the packet to bring to me when he came out in early August :( Hopefully i`ll be able to pick them up in mid-September when we go home to visit.

  6. Another possibility if you are looking for rifle armed warriors is simple conversion of some of Strelets set M138 Boer Infantry by removing hat and adding milliput hair, small round piece pushed over the hatless head and pushed down to shoulders then scratched with pin or needle to create hair effect and any parting or head band. Not all of this set would be suitable but a lot of them, I think. See PSR website at http://plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=2708 to get your own impression. Some hats might even be appropriate but just need hair poking out below brim or feather adding to hat? Carl (on 'one' obviously !! but I know you like a good conversion....)

    1. I actually have some of those to use as US towns folk, might be worth a look when I`m at a loose end.
